How to Replace an replacement audi a3 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are various connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. Look for audi keyless entry signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm audi key fob not working sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to find particularly if they're a Bosch unit like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the replacement audi a4 key's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. If the sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is the same across the audi tt key case 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
